What a good trial lesson looks like

Ten minutes of talk, thirty of playing, and an honest answer about whether this is the rig

A trial lesson is not a free sample of the product. It is a two-way interview, and you should leave with an opinion.

What should happen

  • Ten minutes of questions: what you listen to, what you have tried, what you want in six months.
  • Thirty minutes of actual playing, with the teacher adjusting in real time.
  • One clear next step: a piece, a practice plan, a time.

Green flags

The teacher plays for you without being asked. They correct you once, kindly, and then let you finish the phrase. They say “I don’t know” when they do not know.

Red flags

Talking for forty minutes. Promising Grade 5 in a year. Sighing. A studio with no instrument in tune. And any teacher who cannot tell you what they would teach in the first month.

After the trial

Sleep on it. If you are not sure, ask for a second trial with a different teacher - we do not mind, and it is cheaper than a term of the wrong fit.
