Which instrument first?
Piano is the easiest place to start reading music; guitar gives the fastest result in a month; violin rewards patience and needs a properly sized instrument; singing needs no equipment at all, only a room where you can be loud.
If the student is under seven, start with piano or violin and expect the first term to be about posture and listening rather than repertoire. That is normal, not slow.
